Line spacing / text styles

Is there anyway to configure ToDoPaper to specify the line spacing to be applied to projects, tasks and notes etc? I would like to be able to increase the spacing between project groups but don't this this is possible in this version, other than by entering additional blank lines. Is this correct?

Spaces after projects

I've just moved a ToDoPaper document over to TaskPaper 2.0 (56) and some of the projects did not appear. The problem was that the ToDoPaper project lines had a space after the colon - once I took these out using a text editor they appeared correctly.

I posted this in the Taskpaper forum and that constraint has been added recently... "entries are only recognized as projects if they don't have trailing space. This way you can create notes that end with ":", by adding an extra space after".

Suggestion: Move notes with line

I like adding notes to my tasks. It would be nice if the move functions moved the notes between the current task on the next task together. If I select all the associated lines the CTRL-ALT-UP/DOWN work OK, but I still have to make sure that I skip any other notes so I don't drop the task I am moving between a different task and it's notes.

Slow editor performance?

Is anyone else having trouble with performance in the editor? I'm finding typing to-do items causes significant lag. I don't have an enormous file, so not sure what the trouble is.

Auto Save should work on Close too

I would like to suggest that the auto save option - if turned on should also bypass the "Do you want to save your changes" prompt when closing the software. If I already have auto save turned on I obviously want my changes saved.

I usually leave ToDoPaper running all the time and when I reboot or shutdown my computer it gets hung up by the dialog - even though I think I've closed all my apps - since the taskbar is empty.

Unable to open preferences

I had a problem today that I was unable to open the preferences after making a change to the tagging setting (ti implement a riduculously long done tag). When I tried to exit the applciation I was directed to the log file which contains the following text.

Tag parameters?

I would like to tag some tasks to indicate they are tracked in our central work management system (Team Foundation Server in this case), thus @tfs. Along with this tag, it would be helpful to indicate the work item number, so that I can write a script to update the repository with the ToDoPaper status.

But if I add a parameter to the tag in the form "@tfs(1234)" then the number becomes part of the tag, and I up with a bunch of tags instead of one.

Is the @done tag the only one that supports a parameter (date)?

Cannot quit

Hello Jordan, here is a funny thing : TP does not quit, either by clicking the red cross, or with the Alt-F-x sequence. I have to "kill" it in the Task Manager, where it is labelled as "running" (not "not answering").

Quick Log Shows Comment Style

It seems that the quick log box is showing everything I type in the comments style (for me, green italic), even though I'm typing in tasks (i.e., starting with a "-"). The tasks are showing up properly, but it's disconcerting.

Plus, I too am having trouble with the quick logger keys. Sometimes they work. Sometimes not.

Duplicate Views on Startup

For the past few days (even before the latest update [28 Aug 08]), when I open TodoPaper, I end up with duplicate view, i.e., multiple tabs that show the same view. Even if I'm careful and close the extras, when I reopen, they're there again.

I don't know why you would want to do this, but I stumbled on this:

If I check a box, I get @done, plus a date, and things are crossed off. This is good. If I click that box again, it removes the done plus date, etc.

Instead of checking a box, write @done at the end of a task. The task gets crossed off (in accordance with my styles) but no date is attached.

Now, if you check the box beside this newly done task, you get another @done, plus date. This is not what I expected - I expected the task to be considered undone. Instead, I have a "manual done", then a "really really darned sure I'm done". But no way to get "undone" unless I remove the @done tag I added.

Obviously, the answer is to not use manual @done tags. But the behaviour is unexpected :)

Quick Logging

I noticed today that quick logging is not working on my Windows XP PC. I changes the trigger from + to + but this does not seem to make any difference. Is there a known issue around this at all?

Suggestion: Opening View

I wondered if there would be any benefit to users in being able to define an opening view or search when opening ToDoPaper?

I feel it would be useful to be able to define a search so that the application is opened showing @today tags or @urgent tags or whatever the users defines. What do you think?

Improved keyboard support

In addition to issues mentioned by others (need to support ctrl+left/right arrow [and also ctrl+shift+left/right arrow to select a word at a time -- use Alt+left/right arrow for navigating search history] and support a hotkey to activate), there are a few other problems with keyboard handling that need improvement:

1) When first starting the application, you have to click with the mouse to begin navigating via the keyboard. It should start with focus in the main window.

2) After focusing the search field (Ctrl+Alt+S), there doesn't appear to be any way to return focus to the main edit window. It should support Esc and Enter to do that (and use something other than Enter [i.e., down arrow] to show the history drop-down, and/or turn on auto-completion in that field).

3) Dialogs should support Esc to dismiss them (for instance, Find, About, Print Preview, etc.).

4) After restoring from the tray, focus goes to the search field. Focus should remain where it was when minimized.

5) Instead of Ctrl+Tab to create a new view, and ctrl+right/left to switch (which conflicts with standard editing shortcuts), it would be more standard to use Ctrl+tab/Ctrl+Shift+Tab to cycle between views (I also recommend supporting Alt+1 through 9 to go directly to a tab) and some other shortcut for a new view (perhaps Ctrl+Alt+T).

6) Eliminate duplicate mnemonics on the menus (for instance, on the File menu, w is used for both New &Window and Print Previe&w).

7) File | Close (ctrl+w) isn't operational with multiple windows open.

8) Ctrl+R should not move focus to the search field.

9) Need a keyboard shortcut to close a view (I recommend Ctrl+W for this and Ctrl+Shift+W to close a window).

10) The context (right-click) menu should be displayed near the caret, not the mouse cursor, when initiated via the keyboard (see here).

I just downloaded the TodoPaper free trial today and I'm really loving it. I usually get frustrated and impatient with GTD apps after trying them for 15 minutes and finding that they aren't simple enough to figure out, or flexible enough for my needs, or just plain cluttered and unfriendly in terms of interface. Todopaper is working out great so far. If I am still using it in 15 days' time, I will seriously consider buying it (although I do think $29.99 is a very steep price).

There is only one thing I'm really missing, and that is being able to activate/bring to front the TodoPaper window with keyboard shortcuts. I like having it minimised to the system tray, so Alt-Tabbing to it is not an option, and it's such a simple thing that I can't help thinking I must be missing something somewhere, but I haven't been able to find anything in the documentation or the program itself that mentions this functionality. It's a real dealbreaker for me to have to move my hand over to the mouse and click the systray icon every time I want to access the TodoPaper window, to cross out a task or to look at the next task or just to get an overview of my current projects.

Perhaps something you could do in future, if possible at all (just throwing this idea out there really, I don't even know if it's feasible!) is to make the Quick Logging box more powerful by implementing command line functionality: for example, if the user pulls up the Quick Logging box and enters "show @next", the TodoPaper window appears showing all tasks tagged @next. Or if the user enters "print", it prints off the list. I suggest this because I know Smart To-Do List has a similar keyword functionality: http://www.smarttodolist.com/keyword-commands.html, and while I don't use Smart To-Do List myself, it seems like a very useful thing.

Thanks for this great piece of software!

Edited to add: one further issue - the Quick Logging hotkey works very erratically. Occasionally it's fine, most of the time it's not. I can't get hotkeys that involve Space to register at all for some reason. But this behaviour is, as I said, really erratic, so unfortunately I can't report that it's like that 100% of the time. If it helps, I'm running Windows XP SP2. Thanks!

I've been using todopaper for a few days now based on the recommendation by gtdwannabe and I really like it.

I'll send you a few suggestions for improvements in a few days but my biggest beef is the limited formatting when printing to paper. (I need to do this every so often so I can take a record of tasks etc. when I'm away from my computer)

I'd hoped that printing would create the same view that I see on screen (check box to the left, nicely formatted with headings and tasks etc.) but what I get is a text print file with very limited formatting and no check boxes. Also it's all very small and cramped

As a work around I've started printing a screenshot of todopaper and taking that with me

Do you have you any plans to make the printing a bit more like the view on screen?

ideas for web access

jordan et al,

Just installed TodoPaper, and I'm loving it! I've been testing different desktop and web GTD apps for years, and never found something that was flexible enough and quick to fill like a notepad. So, this was a refreshing surprise.

My only concern is that using a desktop application limits its usage a little bit. It'd be great to use it as the main desktop tool, but have any other way of accessing it through cell/web (during @errands, for example).

I saw another user using webdav, but this solves just part of the equation (accessing from multiple computers) but not cell/web part.

So, would like to suggest to include on the wish list the functionality to sync with a 3rd party web app (like Tasko) automatically, so we can have the best of both worlds.

Archiving Projects

Right now, I''m wondering if there is, or might be, a way to archive completed projects? Currently, I just delete them when there are no more tasks. Seeing as how the archived tasks still retain their project tags, this is okay, but there must be a better solution, eh?

Checkbox broken?

I haven't had a chance to try out the new 1.0.8 version until yesterday. Imagine my surprise when I checked a checkbox next to a done task, and nothing happened. Absolutely nothing. No @done tag assigned. No crossing off of the line. Just a checkmark.

I unchecked an already-done task, and it became "undone", but rechecking the box did not mark it done again.

Is something broken? Am I suddenly doing something wrong?

Are You Sure You Want to Quit?

Please, for the love of whoever, kill that "Are you sure you want to quit?" message. I make doubly sure that I've saved my file before even heading over to the big X on the window. Yes, I'm sure I want to quit.

Or make it an option, or something. I can see nagging me if I've forgotten to save the file, but yes, when I hit the X and my file is saved, I'm darned sure I want to quit.

Tag Project View

Hi I have found Todopaper to be really useful coming from Taskpaper on my mac. I'm excited about being able to move files between platforms and also your syncing in the cloud thoughts ( I think this was on your blog) to do a shared todolist with my husband.

I'm not sure if this is an issue, request or thought but when I double click on a tag to see only tasks with that tag, if I've tagged a project or subproject, I only see the project name and not all the tasks and notes under it.

What I am doing is tracking a bunch of projects I am involved in and I'm using tags to denote the project owner. So when so-and-so calls me up, I need to pull up all the projects and tasks related to so-and-so to discuss everything so-and-so cares about or might care about.

System Tray Estate

I'm one of the users who likes to keep my work area free from distraction and I keep my System Tray as empty as possible.

If "Minimize to System Tray" and "Enable the ability to log new tasks from within other applications" are unchecked, is it possible to not have the TodoPaper icon in the System Tray at all when a document is open?

I've already told the Taskbar Properties dialog to "Always Hide" TodoPaper's System Tray icon, but if I ever need to expand it the system tray (to access the volume control or something), I'll have to consider the unwanted icon as I look for whichever system tray icon I really want.

I know this is a picky request, I appreciate the consideration.

Quick Logging

The shortcut seems to be recognized by the system (the hourglass appears) but then the window never appears.

Date on @done

I like how there's a date attached to a task when it is archived, e.g., Blah blah blah @waiting @done @archive(Fixing\_Document) @date(28 May 08). Would it be possible to have the same date functionality added when an item is marked done?

Then I would see something like: Blah blah blah @waiting @done @date(28 May 08) in my main list. When I archive it, a second date, the archive date, is attached.

Of course, this could be something that you put in as an option ;)

Enter in Quick Entry Dialog

I've noticed that the newest quick entry dialog closes on "enter" now, instead of just control+enter, like the last version. I was surprised by the change, since I was using enter to add more than one line item. I figured out that "shift+enter" will work for that purpose.

I'm not complaining, just curious why you went all the way to having enter close the dialog. Was this something that people were requesting? Like I said, just curious...

Custom Styling Screws Up Subprojects

Every time I try to use a custom styling, e.g., a red @today tag, it screws up the formatting for my subproject headings. For example, see the image here: http://www.gtdwannabe.com/images/temp/2008-05-18\_1.png

I've got one custom style, set to red/bold for the @today tag. Notice that my subproject heading is now red/bold. If I remove all custom styles, my subproject headings are just smaller versions of my project headings, i.e., Sketchy font.

Feature Request:

It would be nice if we could also modify the font for custom styles. I find that the custom style always goes to the default (arial?) font, which I don't use for my tasks. Makes the tag font stick out.

Is there anyway to switch off the "are you sure you want to quit?" dialogue? As I have Todopaper running all the time in the system tray, it stops Vista from shutting-down before the dialogue is clicking-on.

WebDav access

Hi, I store my todo file on a webdav drive hosted by a commercial service. I can open, edit and save the file directly when I use Taskpaper on my mac. However, when I try to do the same with TodoPaper from my Win Laptop, the program acts as if the file was saved, but in fact the file on the networks drive has not been changed at all. I circumvent this problem currently by saving the todo list on my hard drive and after finishing editing, I sync it with the webdrive.

I wondered if you know any way to solve this problem.

I also wondered if there is a way to save the "view" made under TodoPaper, i.e. to have filtering tabs show up the way that they were set when TodoPaper is shut down. Currently, I need to add tabs manually every time I start TodoPaper.

Otherwise, I am very happy with this software, especially given the fact that it is just 1 month old (congratulations!) Best, Christoph

Todopaper is extremely unstable on my system

Hi, I am evaulating Todopaper. I have to say it is the best task list solution I have ever seen and used. I like its simplicity and effectiveness. Unfortunately I ran into serious stability and other problems which keeps me from using/purchasing it.

It cannot save any file. Even if I manage to "save" it via autosave, the file cannot be opened later. [img]http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b150/raptor3D/Todopaper%20forums/error01.jpg[/img]
I cannot exit the program. It asks "Are you sure you want to quit". I hit "Yes" and nothing happens at all. The programm is still running.

I use Windows XP SP2. AMD Athlon 64bit 3200+ Asus A8V Deluxe nVidia 6800LE

Feature Request: Archive to Another File

I really like the ability to quickly archive my completed tasks. Pretty cool how the name of the project is appended too.

However, my todopaper text file is getting big, and will only get bigger as I complete more tasks. (This makes it harder for me to use for printing out lists of tasks, for example.) Would it be possible to provide an option for archiving done tasks to another text file?

Quick Log Box Not As Functional

Me again. Another thing I've noticed about the new version (1.0.3.0) is that the quick log box is no longer as useful because I can't use it without a mouse.

Yes, it's cool that you can add all sorts of things, e.g., a Project with several tasks, all at once, but then there's no way to hit "log" unless you use your mouse. The tab key just indents the current line, and there's no Alt+keycode for any of the buttons.

Might I suggest something like "ctrl+enter" to allow the user to hit the log button without using the mouse?

P.S. I would also suggest that "log" is not an intuitive label. At first I thought it would bring me to the error log of the application. But when I realized that my choices were "cancel" and "log", I guessed that "log" really meant "ok".

P.P.S. I've also noticed that there's no okay/cancel buttons for the preferences screen. That screws me up constantly.

Update to 1.0.3.0 Loses Ctrl+H

I just updated to 1.0.3.0 and now can't use the Ctrl+H shortcut key. I could have sworn that was the key combination to show/hide completed actions from the list. (I don't like archiving until I'm done a certain amount on a project; instead, I like to just hide the completed lines.)

Is it accidentally gone? Coming back soon?

CTRL-SPACE

Has anyone been able to get this to work? I've found that even though the application says CTRL-SPACE, it's actually SHIFT-SPACE that does the quick logging invocation. Frankly, I'd prefer CTRL-SPACE, so any tips to get that working would be super.

Is there a particular reason that you decided to have the AutoSave feature save to a modified file name?

This has caused a little bit of confusion for me when trying to determine which file is the most recent or upto date.

Just a question.

I am really enjoying this software. It is easy to use and is quite streamlined.

Recurring tasks - an idea

Hi Jordan,

Nice little app - really love the way that a quick find and replace on my todo.txt can be enough to import the file into Todopaper. Going to trial for the next 15 days and see if it works for me.

One little thing that would be the icing on the cake (ok, in additional to USB portabliliy to use Todopaper at work) - Is there any plan to support recurring tasks?

This could work via the addition of an extra parameter to the date context.

For example:

@08-04-10r1w - recur weekly from 08-04-10 (next recurrence on 08-04-17) @08-04-10r1m - recur monthly from 08-04-10 (next recurrence on 08-05-10) @08-04-10r3m - recur quarterly from 08-04-10 (next recurrence on 08-07-10)

Clicking the "done" checkbox would strikethrough the task and add the next occurance to the same project (or would it just change the date of the todo? I'm not sure...).

Perhaps (and this would be a killer), there could be a way of making these recurrences even cleverer. For example, how about a way of making the recurrence know about weekends. So, say I want a todo that tells me to fill-in a timesheet - but, this timesheet needs filling in on the last day of each month. Great, so I add the parameter "- Monthly timesheet @08-04-30@r1m", but the last day in May is 31st, so I'd want this next recurrence on 08-05-31. Ummmm, and there's another problem - 08-05-31 is a Saturday, but I don't want to be working on a Saturday, so I'd want it to set the date on the task to be on the Friday before.

I guess finding some mind-bogglingly difficult way to do this using some @ code would be tough! Not sure if any other app can do this either (although I could be wrong).

Just some thoughts...

Today (April.8) I have released a new version of TodoPaper. This new version includes several bug fixes, plus some new functionality based from your comments and suggestions.

    - Added the ability for the outline pane to remember its size

Some thoughts

Hi Jordan, I want to start by saying I love your product and I''ve been waiting for this for awhile - thanks a bunch!

I just downloaded your demo last night, and based on what I''ve done so far, I wanted to suggest the following:

1) $30 bucks seems a little steep for text-based product when the original design product is only $18.95. Not sure I''m willing to fork that out just yet, especially considering you just released it and we could be looking at additional charges for upgrades to full versions?!? Might suggest a lower intro price, at least until the product is a little more mature.

2) I''ve had some challenges navigating through the program. I think it would rock if there was a quick find feature (i.e., CTRL+F) or some equivalent other than search that would allow you to Go To a specific word and that would allow you to quickly exit the search. Your "Find and Replace" feature is close, but you can''t just "Find" something easily with the keyboard - i.e., you have to type it in, then click find, then select the "x" because escape doesn''t get you out. I guess just cleaning that up would be very useful.

3) Not sure what happened, but I was messing around with your insert time as tag function (CTRL + U), and I tried to change the format of the date, went back to the program, pressed it, and all of the display changes I had made (i.e., font, size and colour) reset to the default. I also lost all of the additional default tags I had added to the preferences screen. As I said, not sure what happened here, but it was kind of a pain. Might be nice to be able to save additional template formatting setups (i.e., like your "Light" and "Dark") created by the user.

I know you are currently working on the documentation, but in the interim, here's a question. Is it possible to do more advanced searching / sorting that just using tags/projects? Can you do AND, OR, and NOT searches? For example, I want a list of every thing I do @home, AND NOT @computer, AND NOT in project "Archive". If this is possible (or some form of it), can you let me know how?

Hey All,

I posted a new version today. Here are the changes:

- Added a @today shortcut (Ctrl+Y)
- Added in a preference option to minimize to the system tray
- Added in the ability to customize the quick log keyboard shortcut
- Updated the filter / search to allow for editing during searches
- Updated the updater to only show the window if an update is available.
- Fixed a bug causing the double click of the system tray icon to not
  toggle the hide/restore of the main frame
- Fixed a bug when a file failed to load, the filename was not being 
  cleared from memory, causing file overwrites.
- Fixed indenting bug in notes
- Fixed the bug causing autocomplete to not show when near the edges of
  the editor area
- Fixed a bug causing the border for the autocomplete list to disappear
- Fixed a bug which caused the caret to disappear

Some issues with the current version (1.0.0.1)

Hi,

I found some issues with the current version and also have some ideas:

Bug:

Find and replace does not seem to work for tags.
When you edit within filtered results, the filter goes away.

Improvements:

It would be nice if the update checker would only display a window if there is an update.
I'd love an option to minimize to system tray. This is already implemented via the hide context menu entry but it would be great if hiding could be configured as default behaviour when minimizing and also if a double click on the system tray icon would hide the app if it's visible and vice versa (vice versa already works).

Ideas:

I'd love an @today tag with a shortcut.
It would be great if one could open and save directly to a WebDAV Ressource. I know Windows is supposed to be able to do this and even map those ressources but it's rather broken.

Even though there are little things that could still be improved I already heavily use the app and I'm quite happy with it. Thanks for developing the windows clone of taskpaper!

TodoPaper File Extension Bug

Looks as if there was a slip-up in the install for 1.0.

The *.todopaper file extension wasn't being registered in windows as a file type. The new, 1.0.0.1 setup file will fix this issue.
