WideFido™

Downtime

on July 21, 2008 03:17PM

Hey everybody.

This morning Godaddy was kind enough to "park" the Widefido.com domain. After some talks we figured out there was a glitch in my account, causing a 2 hour downtime during DNS switching.

I want to offer an apology for this downtime and hope that nobody was severely affected. If you were, please contact me :)

Thanks for understanding.

Back in Action

on July 08, 2008 02:42PM

This past weekend was great. I had a nice road trip to Virginia, ate some good food in good company, and really enjoyed the break.

But, I'm back! Now I need to go through this pile of emails I received during my time off.

Thanks! Hope your weekend was as great as mine :)

Wget on the OS X Command Line

on July 02, 2008 06:40PM

I've grown to using 'wget' on the Linux command line to download files. I switched to the Mac a while back (and just installed a fresh copy of Leopard on my Macbook Pro). I was sad to find again that there is no wget in OS X without installing Darwin ports or Fink. However, there is hope! OS X comes pre-installed with cURL, which can be used the same way as wget. Here's an example command to download a file:

curl -O http://www.domain.com/file.zip

I set up a simple alias in my ~/.profile file to disguise this as wget:

alias wget = 'curl -O'

Now, when in the OS X terminal, I can use the wget command to download files!

Good News

on June 21, 2008 03:28PM

Hey Everybody,

I have some great news! I, along with Jesse from Hogbay, and Young Hoo from Taskodone, are working on an "in the cloud" file storage system for TaskPaper and TodoPaper documents. This will be a great milestone for our three applications.

What I'm expecting to come from this:

  • Full document syncing with files in the cloud
  • Document viewing and editing from within the Online editor.
  • Save in TodoPaper to the cloud, view the document in the online editor (say, on your iphone), and then download and sync to your Mac with TaskPaper.

Do you have any requests for specific functionality you would like to see?

I answer all of my emails...

on June 09, 2008 03:30PM

and you should too! (You know who you are)

Get Excited

on June 09, 2008 12:09PM

One of the best things I heard at SEED:

"Always start a project with 'It would be awesome if...' that way, you'll get excited about it."

You need to be excited, otherwise, the project is going to suck. A project can have a TON of opportunity, but if you aren't excited about it, then why would you want to work on it? Your project should be fun. Of course, this quote sums it up,

"Be excited and passionate about what you are doing. Failure is less sucky when you are working on things you like to work on"

(Both quotes from Jake and Jeffery from Threadless )

SEED3 Conference

on June 07, 2008 12:05AM

Wow. Today has been great. I spent the day at the SEED3 conference here in Chicago, put on by 37Signals, Segura Inc, and Coudal Partners. I'll be posting a couple of posts illustrating so very key points the speakers made today.

(Btw, If you met me at SEED, shoot me an email )

TodoPaper 1.0.7 Released

on June 04, 2008 02:32AM

Wow has it been a long week already...and we're only to Tuesday! Well...no worries, TodoPaper 1.0.7 is up! Go here to download the update

Here's a changelog for this release:

- Added a Search History feature.
- Added a function "Show Project" to the right click menu. This allows you
  to start a project search.
- Fixed a bug causing the cursor position to move when tagging a task as done.
- Fixed a small bug in the file change listener.
- Fixed a bug where done tags are shown even though a project is collapsed.
- Fixed a bug where tabs weren't closing on file close.
- Fixed a bug in the collapsing of projects during searches.
- Fixed a number of small bugs and edits.
- Removed "Are you sure you want to quit?"

The newest feature is a "Search History" which keeps track of the items you search for as you work on your TodoPaper file. It allows you to move back and forward through your searches similar to how a web browser back and forward works. Try it out, play with it, let me know what you think.

If you have any suggestions, comments, or questions please let me know!

A bit late

on June 03, 2008 01:44PM

I apologize for those of you who are waiting for TodoPaper 1.0.7. It was supposed to release June 1, but due to complications and a few last minute modifications it was postponed until later tonight.

I'll post again here once the new version is available for download.

Updates...

on May 30, 2008 08:23PM

Hey Everybody,

There are a couple of new things happening with Widefido right now. I'll be posting to help keep you updated on these as I work through them. Here's what I'm doin:

First, I'm setting up and migrating the site to a new beefy server. This should help us in with the speed of the site, along with its stability. Don't be worried if at some point the Widefido site becomes inaccessible, it'll probably be one of my goof-ups. If, however, you experience extended downtime ( greater than 30 minutes ) feel free to shoot me an email: jordan@widefido.com

I'm also going to be migrating the forums to a new "helpcenter" from the good folks over at GetSatisfaction. This is the same help / support center that Twitter and other popular sites use. What is really cool about this is how GetSatisfaction has packaged this help center almost to the point of a drag and drop install. It utilizes their nifty GetSatisfaction API, so all of the posts will be available from the GetSatisfaction website. Neato!

I'm also working on a new release of TodoPaper, which should be out on June 1. It'll have some fixes and little feature additions.

I think that's about it for now. I'll keep you updated!

TodoPaper 1.0.6 Released

on May 21, 2008 06:09AM

Howdy!

I've posted version 1.0.6 of TodoPaper for download. This update contains numerous bug fixes, additions, and changes. Update your version of TodoPaper Here

Here's the change log:

- Added in file hot-linking. Just drag and drop any file into the editor to
  create a link.

re-open the file, it will re-open the previous set of view tabs.
- Added Ctrl+] and Ctrl+[ to change the currently selected tab view
- Remapped Archive Done Tasks to Ctrl+Shift+D
- Renamed some menu labels to be more descriptive
- Fixed a bug causing the outline pane to not retain its with on auto-open
- Fixed a bug causing user styles to strangely style sub-project lines
- Fixed a bug causing breaking the styles refresh after preferences save
- Fixed a bug causing user preferences to break on a fresh install
- Fixed a bug causing the cursor to move positions when marking a task done

Most notably is the new functionality of:

1) File hot-linking, and 2) Tab saving 3) Ctrl+Shift+D to Archive Done Tasks

Thanks again for all of your comments and feedback! If you have any more comments, questions, or bug reports, please let me know via email or forums

First TodoPaper Screencast

on May 21, 2008 05:50AM

After recording, editing, re-recording, and re-editing, I finally feel ok releasing the first help screencast for TodoPaper. This was my first screencast, so pardon the weird sound quirks. Producing a quality screencast is a LOT harder than it looks.

This screencast only covers the main interface and simple to-do list editing. More advanced topics will be available soon. Once I get used to the process, new screencasts should be popping up more frequently.

So, go ahead and watch the first todopaper screencast

Please feel free to give me your feedback But remember, this is the first screencast. It is only a simple overview. :D

Thanks!

string.title() in Python

on May 21, 2008 03:18AM

John Gruber, from DaringFireball, posted a neat little title casing script he uses when publishing to his blog. (You can check out the article here )

I found it disappointing that string.title() in Python didn't title his "edge" cases properly at all. Well, I looked through his Perl script and whipped up a python version. While it isn't completely Pythonic (I tried to stay as close to his code), it is definitely usable and interesting. ;)

You can grab the source here if you would like to look through it. Any comments are appreciated.

Keyboard Shortcuts

on May 14, 2008 12:32PM

TodoPaper is a very efficient tool when you take advantage of the ample supply of keyboard shortcuts. I've compiled a list of them for the help documentation. You can check the keyboard shortcuts out if you'd like. I think later I may even post some multiple command workflows. For example,

Ctrl+D, Ctrl+U, Ctrl+Shift+A

Which would:

  1. Tag your task done, then
  2. Tag your task with the date,
  3. Archive the line.

Let me know if you have any command sequences that you use daily.

Best,
Jordan

NOTE: The shortcuts listed are for the next release (1.0.6) which will be out later this week. The Archive Done Tasks shortcut has changed to Ctrl+Shift+D

Downtime

on May 13, 2008 05:32AM

Hey Everybody,

Today (some time around midday GMT -6) my payment processor experienced some downtime. I apologize for this. If you were at all adversely affected by this, please let me know.

Thanks!

Where do you do you work?

GmTD with TodoPaper

on May 06, 2008 04:59PM

Before I started building TodoPaper, I was really fascinated by David Allen's GTD philosophy. I started practicing GTD regularly. However, after using TodoPaper to help me out in the GTD front, I was solving problems and tackling tasks more quickly and efficiently. This is why I think a new extension of GTD should be formed:

GmTD (Get MORE Things Done)

or even

GmTDwTDP (Get MORE Things Done with TodoPaper)

NOTE: GmTD and GmTDwTDP are not actual philosophies or methodologies. See comments.
EDIT: This post was confusing, so I changed it a bit to clarify.

TodoPaper 1.0.5

on May 03, 2008 08:03PM

Hey All,

Today I am releasing a maintenance update to TodoPaper, bringing the version to 1.0.5. This update is primarily bug fixes with a few changes. Here's the changelog:

- Print function now saves you paper preferences.
- Rewrote the functionality of the Return key
    - A return at the end of the line will create a new task if the
current in is a project or a task.
    - A return in the begining or middle of a line will cause the line
to be split. This is how normal text editors work
    - Shift+Return on a task line or a project line will add a new task
      on the next line
    - Ctrl+Shift+Return on a task line or a project line will add a new
      note on the next line
- Fixed a bug causing preferences to become corrupted and crashing the
  app.
- Fixed spellcheck remembering whether or not it was last turned on / off
- Fixed the URL style to use default fonts.
- Fixed selection being cleared when indenting mutiple lines.

When updating to this version, there are several things to keep in mind.

  1. The update to the preferences uses a different storage procedure, so your previous settings file (along with your preferences) will be overwritten. I'm sorry for this, but in going forward, we should have fewer problems with the preferences.
  2. The Enter/Return key no longer behaves incorrectly. (Press it within the middle of a line, and it will now split the line) See the changelog for more info.

You can download the update here

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.

TodoPaper 1.0.4 Released

on April 28, 2008 03:10AM

Here's the changelog:

- Added Toggle Done Tasks (Ctrl+H) back into the app
- Added in double clicking to follow links (similar to the Ctrl+Click)

the quickness of the original version.
- Re-designed the margin line markers for both projects and tasks.
- Removed the @important underlining
- Fixed the URL style to use the default text font face and font size
- Fixed a bug with project folding when searching a within project

You can grab the update here

Thanks for all of your support. Please let me know if you have any questions and comments.

Best, Jordan

UPDATE There was a bug in 1.0.4 which caused the app to refuse to save a file to disk. I've squashed the bug and uploaded a new installer (1.0.4.1). You can grab the NEW update here I apologize for this and any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

New Functionality

on April 23, 2008 01:02PM

So, in the 1.0.3 version of TodoPaper some things have changed. Most notably is the removal of link nature of clicking the projects, tags, and urls. The hotlinks of these styles was becoming a problem when a user needed to edit the contents of the link, tag, or project. What I have done to solve this problem is require the user to hold the Ctrl button down when clicking to follow the link. This is a standard way of handling links in a text editor and think it will make it a bit easier to make changes to the contents of your document.

Also, I changed the previous project title link from folding the project, to searching within the project. To fold the project, you can - Use the hotkey Ctrl+M - Click the new margin indicator for projects

Let me know what you think of these changes. Your feedback is always welcome :)

TodoPaper 1.0.3 Released

on April 23, 2008 12:42PM

Hey all,

It has been a few days since I have last posted. Things sure have been a bit hectic around here. No worries though, I did take some time to fix and update some things in TodoPaper. Here are the changes:

- Sub-projects now show in a smaller font.

  easier editing, and better "Views"
- Updated the margin to include an indicator for projects. This indicator
is used to fold the projects.
- Updated the updater to keep from freezing

  opening the autosave file.
- Fixed a bug causing the editor to scroll randomly
- Fixed strikeouts
- Fixed not being able to select autocomplete with the mouse

- Added archive to the right click context menu
- Fixed another scrolling problem when switching between outline
  and the document
- Fixed the outline pane generating the projects list with a previous
  documents projects.

Screencasts

on April 10, 2008 08:56PM

Howdy!

I'm working on recording some screencasts for TodoPaper and was wondering what you would like to see. Here are some topics I have so far:

  • Introduction to the Interface
  • Simple To-do lists
  • Tagging and Contexts
  • Advanced Searching
  • Customizing the Interface
  • Defining Custom Styles

What do you think?

New Upgrade Policy

on April 08, 2008 03:45PM

I've updated the upgrade policy for Widefido software.

Previously, I was thinking about charging for major upgrades (i.e., 1.0 to 2.0) with discounts given to license holders. However, this model was not coinciding with the Widefido core values. So, for the time being, I have changed the policy so licensed users can upgrade to the latest version of the software for free! This includes major revisions, such as from 1.0 to 2.0.

Let me know if you have any questions.

TodoPaper 1.0.2 Released

on April 08, 2008 03:21AM

I just posted another update to TodoPaper. Included in this update is:

  • Added the ability for the document outline pane to remember its size
  • Added a short-cut to toggle the document outline (Alt+O)
  • Added new date tag format presets
  • Revamped the find and replace dialog

One thing to notice is the Search History function. You can now save your searches by pressing enter in the search textbox. You can see your saved searches by clicking the magnifying glass icon in the textbox.

I will continue to work on implementing some of your suggestions. I really appreciate your comments and hope to continue making TodoPaper a great application. Thanks again for all of your support!

TodoPaper 1.0.1 Released

  • Added in the ability to customize the quick log keyboard shortcut

TodoPaper 1.0 Released

on March 27, 2008 12:30PM

I am proud to announce the public release of TodoPaper 1.0, a simple and easy-to-use task list manager. TodoPaper is inspired by the wonderful work from Jesse at HogBay Software.

The past 4 months have been a great thrill. I appreciate all of the Codename Merlin Beta Testers' hard work during the beta period. Without their help, TodoPaper would still be in its infancy.

Here are some quick stats:

  • 1.5 months of development
  • 2.5 months of testing, tweaks, and updates
  • 30K lines of code (not including the windows libraries)
  • 150 beta testers
  • From 11 different countries

I want to thank everybody again for helping make this possible. I really feel Widefido and TodoPaper can and will do great things.

Best,
Jordan
