Quick Logging Subscribe to this topic

This application looks very promising, however I seem to be having issues getting the Quick Log feature to work.

The shortcut seems to be recognized by the system (the hourglass appears) but then the window never appears.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Hey Mike,

Which version of windows are you running?

Jordan

Edit: Typo

on April 09, 2008 05:17PM

I am running Windows XP SP2.

on April 09, 2008 07:46PM

Hey Mike,

I can't replicate the bug. Which keyboard shortcut are you using for the Quicklog? When you close the application, is there an error log message displayed?

Thanks! Jordan

Sorry, just saw your e-mail.

I am using TodoPaper 1.0.2.0

I have defined CTRL+SPACE as the shortcut.

Oddly enough, as I type this message it seems to be working. . . .

However, the shortcut combo that is working is not what is defined within the app. The combo that is working is SHIFT+SPACE.

Very strange.

there could be an issue as I am also running LAunchy and Google Desktop which both have hotkeys.....

on April 09, 2008 07:56PM

Hmm, new wrinkle.

It seems that the hotkey disables when you open Preferences for editing. When you close and relaunch the app it begins working again.

Although it is still a different combination than is in the preferences.

on April 09, 2008 07:58PM

Hey Mike.

The preferences is designed to stop the hotkey, so you can define a new one.

However, I'm not sure why it is a different combination than what is in there. Try setting the hotkey to something liket Ctrl+Shift+L, or something not involving the spacebar.

It COULD be an issue with Launchy and Google Desktop, but I'm not sure. I run Google desktop and it seems to be fine.

Let me know how changing the hotkey goes.

on April 09, 2008 08:02PM

K, I changed the hotkey to a different combination, one that uses three keys, and it is working much better now.

Thanks for your help.

No problem. I'll have to look into it and see if I can replicate it. If you have any more questions, comments, or bug reports, please feel free to either 1. contact me here in the forums 2. or via email

Best,

I could not get ctrl-space to work. I am running version 1.0.2.0 on Windows Vista Ultimate. ctrl-shift-L does work however.

Hey SA,

Thanks for the update. I looked into these bugs and found the problem. There should be a new version released soon to fix this.

Thanks again! Jordan

So far everything works fine for me.

Thanks, Terry

Great! If anybody else encounters a problem, just let me know!

on April 10, 2008 02:29PM

I'm using version 1.0.2.0, on Windows XP Home. I can't get the quick add function working, with any 2 or 3 keys combination...

Everything else is working fine! :-)

I've narrowed down the reason for these errors. I'll be posting an updated release this weekend.

Don't forget, you can be notified of the release by subscribing to the notebook rss feed.

Thanks for your support! Please let me know if you have any further troubles.

This bug is fixed in TodoPaper 1.0.3.0.

my quicklog hotkey (shift+space) brings up both the quick log box and the todopaper window, makes quicklog kind of redundant. I'm using version 1.0.3.0 on Vista Home Basic.

Thanks for your bug report. I'm pleased to let you know that this bug is fixed in TodoPaper 1.0.4.0

Thanks again!

Here's a recipe to make it fail with 1.0.7.0: Open only one TodoPaper documement. Notice the feature work. Open a different TodoPaper document. Notice the feature work with regard to the first document. Close the first document. Notice the feature has stopped working, even though the second document is open. To make the feature start working again, close all open TodoPaper documents and open one, or uncheck and recheck the "Enable" checkbox for Quick Logging.

Unless I accidentally did the above, the following may have happened: Installed 1.0.7.0 on a fresh system and launched it without restarting the system, the "Enable" checkbox for Quick Logging was checked, but the feature didn't work yet. (I tried the shortcut with the Preference dialog closed and another application in the foreground.) I unchecked and rechecked the "Enable" checkbox, and the feature then worked.

I'm not sure I've developed the right workflow for Quick Logging yet, but I'd still like to put forth a few suggestions:

  1. A slightly wider dropdown for the Projects names. It's more than wide enough for "Inbox" but not wide enough for most of my project names.
  2. Newly entered tasks to be appended to the bottom of the tasklist for the selected project.
  3. The quicklogger to remember which project was last quicklogged to, and to default to that one.
  4. Edited The name of the target TodoPaper document at the top of the quicklogger, for context.

Those last two suggestions might be better off as preference options.

It's a very nice product.

Edit: Added item #4

Hey David,

Thanks for posting this. I really appreciate your detailed description of the problem and the steps to replicate. I've tested and confirmed this to be a bug. I'll look into adding a fix in the next release.

Your suggestions are very good and will be helpful in making the quick log feature better and more consistent. I am considering all of them and will keep you updated as they are added to the app.

Thanks again for your help. I appreciate it.

Best,
Jordan

Also, does anybody have any comments on David's suggestions?

on June 04, 2008 04:26PM

I don't tend to use more than one todopaper doc, but I can see the problem if the quick logger loses track of where it's sending information.

Re the rest of the suggestions, I'm a big fan of (2). I hate having my new tasks float to the top of a project. So much so, that I tend to spend the extra time to open the document and put the new task exactly where I want it.

on June 04, 2008 04:55PM

Thanks!

on June 04, 2008 05:13PM

My use case for multiple documents was collaborating with a colleague who uses TaskPaper. Comparing notes, splitting up tasks, etc.

Even so, when you make a consumer app, and allow a certain workflow, you'll find some users use it, so you'd best support it.

Maybe another user will generate new documents by copying the structure of old ones. If the application gets popular enough, somebody will.

Most of these comments have been implemented in TodoPaper 1.0.8. Go here to update to the latest version

on June 23, 2008 01:18PM

I got the update to 1.0.8. Yea! Quick Logging is now working the way I want! I'm really happy. Thanks very much, Jordan.
