I've been using todopaper for a few days now based on the recommendation by gtdwannabe and I really like it.

I'll send you a few suggestions for improvements in a few days but my biggest beef is the limited formatting when printing to paper. (I need to do this every so often so I can take a record of tasks etc. when I'm away from my computer)

I'd hoped that printing would create the same view that I see on screen (check box to the left, nicely formatted with headings and tasks etc.) but what I get is a text print file with very limited formatting and no check boxes. Also it's all very small and cramped

As a work around I've started printing a screenshot of todopaper and taking that with me

Do you have you any plans to make the printing a bit more like the view on screen?

Thanks for you work on the application

I think someone has mentioned this before, as I've always have thought about it. For now, printing will just be a stylized text print. Maybe in the future more advanced printing will be come available. My thought is however, to keep you from printing. We are currently working on a portable solution for TodoPaper/TaskPaper files where you'll have access to an online editor and file storage and syncing between computers, so, you'll be able to access your tasks from anywhere with the internet, and not have to print :)

In regards to the print text size, you should be able to increase this. Try going into the preferences pane and adding 4 or 5 pt to each of the font sizes. After saving the preferences, try printing. Now, if you print often, this could get tedious. An option is to keep the font sizes much larger, and use the zoom out function (located in the view menu) to return the fonts to their "normal" size.

I hope this has helped. Please let me know if you need anything else!

At the moment I'm evaluating TODOPAPER against TUDUMO based on GTD Wannanbe's comments.

See http://gtdwannabe.com/2008/05/tudumo-another-great-gtd-tool/

I'd prefer to stick with TODOPAPER but the printing capabilities of TUDOMO are much better i.e. it looks on paper exactly the same as on the screen.

I know you're working to improve the portability of TODOPAPER (which is great) but for me there are times when I'm away from a screen and I do need to have a paper copy. So paper is really important for me.

It's kind of ironic that the title is TODOPAPER and the "paper" bit is the one area where it's weak :)

BTW way I've tried messing arround with font sizes etc. which is OK but it takes to long to adjust them each time (even with the reset option)

Have you thought about having 2 sets of configuration options, one for screen, one for paper that would allow different font sizes to be selected?

Hey Ian,

I understand where you are coming from. I'll be looking into a better way to support printing in the future.

For the font sizes, you should only have to set them once. After setting them, you can use the zoom out function in the view menu to "restore" the look of the fonts on screen.

I have thought of two configuration options for printing. In later versions I'm planning on custom themes, which one will be for printing.

In regards to the paper in TodoPaper, it's supposed to be a replacement for paper lists ;) But no worries, I'm considering all of your requests.

Also note, that most requests made by users eventually do make it into the releases :D

with all due respect, software will never be a replacement for paper lists. I think few committed gtd users are looking for a replacement. I really like todopaper for storing and organizing my projects and so on, but when it comes to actually doing stuff, I'd much rather print off a piece of paper than have to find a computer (or even an iphone etc) to access my lists.

For example, as a student I might have a @library context. I'd like a paper list with all these tasks for easy review anywhere in the library, and not have to find a computer terminal (that has a usb plug) or unpack and start my laptop. Shopping lists are another good example.

I understand. The future holds many new avenues for printing. It will just take some time before they are included in the releases.

Thank you for your concern and comments. Let me know if there is anything else you need.

Jordan,

Whenever I try to print this stuff out, I only get the last page of stuff. TodoPaper only seems to print out one page no matter how much stuff there is to print. If you could fix that bug I'd be very happy! On day 7 of my trial and other than that, it's been great.

Hey Alex,

Can you send me the file you are working on? (jordan@widefido.com)

Thanks!

Hi,

Great product! Just one issue.

I'm having a similar problem with printing.

I can't seem to get the full list printed, instead it prints a subset of the list.

Any solutions or obvious things I'm missing?

Thanks Tom

It should be printing what is in the current / active view. So, if you have a search term open, say all of the things due today, it will only print what is shown in the window. Could this be what is happening?

Otherwise, we may have a bug. Feel free to email me (jordan@widefido.com) if you continue to have problems.
